RANT XL - Rationale
RANT XL has been written by Steve Oddy, a very experienced ex-RAF and civilian instructor who is now a freelance CAA examiner and aviation consultant. He has used a progressive teaching format to allow users to build their knowledge in steps. Firstly, select your aircraft navigation fit, learn about the instruments and the numerous radio-navigation techniques before consolidating that knowledge in the exercise section. Finally progress to the practice section. There are many "flight simulators" with varying degrees of sophistication in the computer software market — but RANT XL, unlike the rest of them, actually teaches the pilot about the instruments, what they are showing, how to interpret them and fly the aircraft to achieve the object of the navigation task. This is all done without having to fly using an unrealistic joystick, but instead using a mouse to control the aircraft as if using a flight director/autopilot — allowing the pilot to concentrate on navigation.
